TLDR version: from a technical perspective their desktop products are too expensive for the hardware performance you are getting and they’re usually packages in such a way that they can’t be reasonably modified at home. The mobile products are less offensive but still seem to be purposefully lacking in functionality.

Emotionally. They make overpriced fashion accessories for the tech illiterate. Apple used to be the enthusiast choice, back when they were still partnered with Motorola. They were always more expensive but you used to get more performance as a trade off. Not anymore. The moment they sold iMACS in different flavors is when I jumped ship completely.

We had an ipod in a drawer that hadn’t been used in a year. Gave it to a family member.

I don’t think I have any pens that arent dried up.

SigOther works at a film school (nearly everything is Apple) so she gets some things free and others at a discount. It all integrates well, and the only reason I’d open, say, my Mac Mini up is to add more RAM - I always max it out when I first get it.

In addition to that we have an iPhone 6S Plus, 6 Plus, iPad, iPad mini. I bought a 24 inch Vizio TV to use as a monitor. There’s an iPhone 5 somewhere that we need to recycle but we can’t find it. She was able to combine her U.S. and Japanese accounts, so I got a free iPhone 6S Plus - had to have it unlocked in Japan, but now it runs on Verizon. We gave my 6S to a friend. And my phone evokes no emotions - it’s in a Lifeproof battery case so it weighs something and I have something to grip - hate thin phones.

A lot of institutions get a substantial discount on Apple products. And if I understand correctly video editing software available for MAC OS is still superior so that makes sense.

As for the mobile products, I just don’t get how they get away with not offering USB support, swappable batteries, expandable storage space, consistent charging solutions, and aux ports.

Her MacBook Pro has 2 drop-down USB ports, and we have a remote drive (plays region 2 DVDs!). And the 7 has no headphone jack ... can’t wait to see those buds being ripped out of some hipsters ears on the 3 train. I’m going to make this 6S Plus last forever.
